Final Review of America Alone by Steyn

The book is interesting and grim. It does deal with demographics in a readable way.
Most of us know the deep trouble Europe is in. Steyn touches upon the causes of population decreases. Most of it does fall in the realm of economics.

The reality is our society has changed. In my fathers generation it was common for a person to work for the same company thirty years. One could start a Mom and Pop business and many did. The reality is jobs and even the nature of employment have changed. One can easily find oneself unemployed and between jobs and offshoring is a real problem. My friends in the fashion industry seem to change employers every three
years. Sometimes they work for three years and miss one year.

The cost of housing and education are at all time highs. Students emerge saddled with debt into an uncertain job market with worthless degrees to find the cost of housing through the roof.

The truth is we need to fix higher Ed ASAP. We need to stop subsidizing worthless degrees and drive the cost of higher ed down. The first step is the elimination of the current liberal arts base. The second step is the elimination of the Marcuse victimology departments. The third step is elimination for funding of studies with zero probaility of a job at the end. An Accounting, Computer and Education majors should find jobs. The fourth step is to eliminate the pretense of research outside the hard sciences. Most of the research is worthless and read in obscure journals by fellow Marxists.

The reality is that we should encourage the growth of genuine trade schools. A trained auto mechanic or even truck driver has a greater probability of finding steady work than a Peace Studies major.

Steyn touches upon the endless saftey net as a problem. However, the nature of the world we live in has changed. The problem is not the saftery net but a lack of focus
on the real problems of dependency. We also need to invest our scarce resources intelligently. Throwing money at worthless degrees and sham research is a waste.

America need to learn from the disaster of Europe. However, we have an entire political party that seeks to emulate these disasters in America. In reality the far left marxist infiltration of the Democratic party may pose a greater threat than jihadis. We have Muslim enclaves in the USA like Dearborn and Patterson. However, we do not permit endless stays on welfare.

Steyn sees the problem and most of us know Europe is in for a rough time. There was a European arrogance about America. America is a violent society yada yada yada. The Euros had the dream that with an endless saftey net and absurd multiculturalism they could do a better job of assimilating immigrants than America. Thus Mahmoud is given a welfare check and a pat on the head like a good dog. Mahmoud is happy to take your money and thinks it is his divine right. Moreover, Mahmoud doesn't respect your culture or values and wants you to live in a theocracy. He will not respect your traditions and laws and you will convert or live under his thumb.

Steyn forgets that work itself is the greatest leveler. The paternalistic arrogant socialistic approach reduces people to domestic animals. You want a welfare check report at 5 AM and do whatever job you are told. Those that need funds will report
and get into the habit of following instructions meeting goals. One will also learn to respect authority. The jobs should be as menial and annoying as possible so people will be motivated to find other jobs. An endless infantilization and subsistence living is crueler than living a pointless subsitence life.

The book is iteresting in places, but you can do much better like the Gabriel Book.

Beak,
The reality is that we should encourage the growth of genuine trade schools. A trained auto mechanic or even truck driver has a greater probability of finding steady work than a Peace Studies major.

American parents have been sold a bill of goods--that all high-school graduates must go to college. Therefore, college classrooms are filled with students who shouldn't even be there.

The Euros had the dream that with an endless saftey net and absurd multiculturalism they could do a better job of assimilating immigrants than America. Thus Mahmoud is given a welfare check and a pat on the head like a good dog. Mahmoud is happy to take your money and thinks it is his divine right.

Another bill of goods! The idea that such an attitude will persuade those of other cultures to assimilate is false--and downright stupid.

I can't comment much as to your last paragraph. But I will say that Gabriel's book is more readable.

This book does approach must read status. Those of us who read FPM
or the familiar blogs know the statistics and the stories.

We know what happened in France and the demographic mess Europe has created. We see plenty of the Muslims behaving badly stories.

What is sorely needed is a connect the dots type of book. That the problem is not just Israel, Chechnya, India and Europe. The time has come for a Black Book of Islamic Civ. Someone will write it but it isn't available yet.

Actually Ducky the mess has discredited Socialism.

Workfare is more humane to society as a whole than endless pats on the head and free time. The question is what role does society at large have. The Eurosocialist dementia leaves out dependency.

No country has an obligation to allow people to be on the dole indeffinately.

The USA should withdraw from NATO.
It is welfare for Eurosocialist. The Euros got a free ride in the Cold War. The Socialists built huge safety nets because they didn't have to defend themselves.

AOW; I was happy to pass on a Yahoo article about how universities are, more and more, opening their doors to home schooled students, to a home school friend of mine.

You're absolutely right about trade schools and how we've glorified the college eduction so much that many kids are in places they shouldn't be...and showing it in their performance and inability to get jobs afterwards. In Germany, the trade school is practically as revered and popular as the University and one sees successful, really well-trained mechanics (you should see the training requirements, the years needed to get a job, and how many years one must work to OWN a qualified car repair garage!)..... Dennis Prager often talks about the over importance college educations get here.

Had we not encouraged everyone to go to college (probably a product of "my kids will have it better" mentality of the thirties and forties), we might not have had such a strong left, either. One doesn't find car mechanics teachers bringing in leftist politics into every course, I'd imagine!

Lets see as Kerik was an able subordinate this is trivial. This is opposed to Cattle Futures selling pardons and stolen FBI files.

On a scale of 1-10 this rates as a one.

Hillary is not apt to mention this given her own mountain of troubles and her brother's questionable ethincs. Give the American people a choice between Kerik and Hugh Rodham and they will choose Kerik.

With all the scandals who can keep up.

Ducky

The person most likely to crack is Hillary. She needs an Army of handlers and sooner or later the Ice Princess will annoy the American people. What has Hillary Clinton done on her own or since being in the Senate?

Jeanine Pirro's biggest mistake was marrying her worthless husband. He single-handedly destroyed a promising political future.

Maybe something Hillary might have to worry about although she has enough dirt under her own fingers.

"America need to learn from the disaster of Europe. However, we have an entire political party that seeks to emulate these disasters in America."

That is dead on target. We still have leaders in this country who look at Europe as man's greatest achievement...a moral compass. Europe is floundering, why anyone would want to emulate their mistakes is incomprehensible, but they are easily recognizable.
They will be the ones fighting to save John Couey's life.

Economic reasons are probably why I will never get married and have kids. Granted, I make about $55k a year, but that's not nearly enough to have a family where I live. The ones that do have kids and breed are mainly the semi-poverty stricken who can't afford it and suck the rest of us tax-payers (with welfare) dry trying to support their kids--or rich whitey's who hire nannies to raise their kids since they think their lives are too important to bother with child-rearing. This is why I support breeding licenses. People who can't afford to have kids shouldn't have them....people who can afford to have them but neglect them shouldn't have them either. This has got to be the most damn selfish generation ever in the history of Earth. I really want to know for real how much time Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Rosie O'Donnell and all the other Hollywood idiots actually spend raising, teaching, and loving their children. These people adopted children just to add another check to their laundry list of things they wanted to do in their empty lives. Please!

HA! I've just started reading this book. I love the way her writes... I can just hear him speaking in that quirky Canadian accent...

The world is definitely changing. For one thing, technology will continue to take over the jobs that people historically have done (& will do it better). People need to start thinking about what all these people will do instead of 'working'....

I guess if islam is in charge we'll all be back in the dark ages, scrubbing around in the dirt for a root or something like that to eat.

I have a hunch that come fall 2008, when everyone's watching the debates, it won't be the Rudy and Hillary show.
