Asleep at the wheel

I have been getting a huge ammount of hits from South America with the code word Matisyahu. I had no idea his fame had reached South America. I had thought this was some type of Novelty act like Vanilla Ice. I will have to look into record sales, but the notion of a Chasidic person raping about wholesome topics is just odd. I do understand Gangsta rap, but this is odd.

I remember hearing what I thought was I want Moshiach Now on a French Canadian Station. I asked my nephew Drummaster and apparently this is not a flash in the pan.
We could be talking about Matisyahu three years down the road or longer.

Watching a Matisyahu performance on the web is odd. I can not believe people pay to listen to this.

As a NYC resident I am familiar with West Indian patios. Moroever, I can easily speak the Guyanese variant with ease. The Jamaican and Trinidadian ones are slightly different. However, on the ocasions I do talk in that dialect West Indians often can not stop laughing.

Matisyahu seems to have the dialect
down pat. I just do not understand how this is more than a novelty act.

I want to direct those to the Slate
hatchet job on Matisyahu by Judy Rosen. Rosen unfairly calls Matisyahu a mintrel show. Does she expect Matisyahu to sing Regae music with a NY accent it wouldn't work. Moreover, would she accuse the many Arab and Muslim rappers of creating a Mintrel show.Is one going to sing Coutry and Western Music with a West Indian accent?

I do not get the appeal of Maisyahu but he sells records and has an audience. I wonder if Slate was this tough on the Dixie Chicks.

I don't know. Hip-hop is just a style of music (albeit one with lots of subculture baggage I personally can't get past). People can use it to convey any sort of message. Look at T-Bone, for instance.

One more interesting side note. Matisyahu attended the New School For Communist Subversion in NYC. Rather then end up as a self hating Jooo, beloved only by antisemites like Ducky and 167, Matisyahu found God and became a Lubavitcher. In short he ditched Marx for Scheerson. I am starting to like this guy.

The idiotic reporter should spend ten minutes talking to New School Students or Ducky before passing judgement. New School Students are Marxist dopes and advocates for a failed philospher with genocidal accolytes. One may not like the Lubavitcher, but they have not killed 100,000,000. This man has improved himself.

I don't understand the appeal but a local who works at the radio station insisits this is for real.

For reggae, it's not bad stuff.

The idea that certain people may only do certain styles of music is puzzling to me. Just another brick in the leftist stereotype wall.

Didn't Charley Pride knock down this wall years ago?

That is a good point. I wonder if older readers will recall if a British group the Electric Prunes recieved this kind of treatment for singing Gospell music.

hey, i'm in college!!!

matisyahu is the real deal. he used to not be religious, but he is now as orthodox as they come- he holds service with the band every sabbath and doesn't perform friday night to saturday night. the band started playing temple gigs, and gained heavy popularity. he is a good performer. matisyahu is not a schtick like the darkness [who really rock], he is the real deal.

fyi- he was a huge phish-head and we all love the greatness of phish!!

Enjoy college but beware of far left groups in Rutgers. Many of these groups target Jewish students. Just say you aren't political when the time comes.

The person next door is a DJ on the local radio station. He plays Country and Western and assures me that Matisyahu is the real deal.
Even local Vermont teens listen to the stuff.

I do not understand it, but as one who can readily speak in Patios and understand the jewish terms it looks like a bad comedy skit. However, he is selling records and does not appear to be Vanilla Ice.
