The Much Anticiapated Sonia Interview PG-13

Our next guest has the sole distinction of making Mr Beamish blush. However, when one wears a gasmask nobody notices blushing. Sonia did answer the question and apparently that is her picture in the avatar. I want to stress that Beakerambo is not
a self portrait. There is a gender confused person in Tredington who has asked that question.

I am surprised how many of my readers have made the trek to Sonia's blog. Her blog is about far more than nudity and has several top notch political posts and posts about art. Regular readers of this blog know I have an interest in the arts.

Nudity

1 What is the difference between art and pornography? There is nudity in a Renoir or
Greek sculptures, but few would consider them pornographic.

2 Are there people who should keep their clothes on for aesthetic purposes. I do not have a desire to see Janet Reno naked,

3 Do you think the nudity increases the ammount of trolls on your site. Recently, you
had what appears to be a fake Syrian. We usually get the most unhinged leftists and
anti-semites on this site.

Architecture

4 You seem to have a preference for the ancients. Is this a misconception on my part?

5 Name your top five architectural favorites.

Film

6 Is there a bias in the arts community against family fare. I see movies like Shrek,
Monsters Inc and the Incredibles as examples of extreemly well made movies.

7 There are some movies with nudity that are snoozes. I slept through Bolero and Showgirls due to bad writing. Is writing the key to a good movie. You seemed to like Eyes Wide Shut, I found the movie a bore.

8 We have a house film snob ( Poultry) who would like to hear your thoughts on Almodvar. Are there any of his films you would recomend?

9 What are your views of film genres that we never see discused on your blog such as Musicals, Horror, Martial Arts Films and Comedy?

10 Is the age of Epic films like the English Patient, Dr Zhivago, Ben Hur a thing of the past? I would note that the Lord of the Rings trilogy qualifies as an epic.

11 What are your thoughts on the Superhero movies. The Spiderman Franchise seems to do quite well due to well constructed villans and plot lines.

12 Name the top five over rated and under rated films of all time?

13 Do you also watch older films? I was surprised to see how many of my readers remembered Superfly, Harry and Tonto, Black Sunday and some of the older films that
are referenced in passing.

Anti Communism

14 Has anti-Americanism become reflexive amongst the far left?
15 Is the far left a religion? As a pseudo-religion are its true believers oblivious
to logic, facts, history and sanity?
16 Is there a hard core anti-semitic element on the left?
17 I see a mental health defect with many on the far left. Is there a mental health
aspect to people who are prone to idiotic conspiracies, such as the mostly anti-semitic 9-11 fare.
18 Has the far left Disneyfied Islamic history and culture. Theological law placed on nonbelivers with Jim Crow elements, amputations and capital punishment for gays and rape victims does not seem to be humane.
19 Are Communists oblivious to the human toll and history of subversion and treason
in their own history? I often get perplexed far left types who can not understand the
hatred of many for their handiwork.
20 Is the notion that we can create Utopia in this world flawed and sometimes dangerous?
21 What is your response to the Communists who claim that the Khmer Rouge fiasco in Cambodia had nothing to do with Marx?
22 I am amazed at how many arts types sympathise with a movement that surpresses Artistic freedom? How do arts and letters types rationalize this contradiction.
23 Groups supported by the far left FARC, Hezbollah, Taliban are all deeply involved in drug dealing? Do far left types address this at all? Is Drug dealing for Social Justice just another contradiction like liberation via starvation.
24 Do the far left over romanticize terrorists as oppressed? Even today we have unrepentant spoiled terrorists teaching in American Universities named Ayers and Dorn.
25 Why do so many true believers flock to your site? Some of your commentors praise of Cuba. This borders on incoherent lunacy, all of you can read what you are told to read. People just happen to risk death fleeing the workers paradise.

I would like to thank you in advance for your thoughtful responses.

Great questions, Beak, I am really impressed.

I had a lot of fun answering them.

Nudity

1 What is the difference between art and pornography? There is nudity in a Renoir or Greek sculptures, but few would consider them pornographic.

They are almost identical. Art is an individual interpretation of reality. Pornography is an individual interpretation of sex. The best art is pornography. And the best pornography is art. Very reluctantly, I will admit that there is also some (very little) non-pornographic art and non-artistic pornography.

2 Are there people who should keep their clothes on for aesthetic purposes. I do not have a desire to see Janet Reno naked,

It’s called discrimination and it’s perfectly normal. We all discriminate based on sex, race, beauty, age or other factors. It’s sad, but it’s human. Janet Reno might try to file a civil-rights suit against you, but I think it would be rejected.

3 Do you think the nudity increases the ammount of trolls on your site. Recently, you had what appears to be a fake Syrian. We usually get the most unhinged leftists and anti-semites on this site.

Personally, I wish I had more trolls. The only trolls I seem to attract are purely commercial ones, with links to Viagra and cell phone sites. It’s hard to be a troll on my blog. No matter what you write (something obscene, or politically radical, or insane) it’s likely related either to the post in question or to a recent post. My Syrian Borat looks perfectly normal and middle-class respectable on my blog.

Architecture

4 You seem to have a preference for the ancients. Is this a misconception on my part?

Not at all. I like modern architecture too, but slighly less than old architecture. There is a mystique aura around ancient historic sites that Frank Gehry’s buildings simply don’t have.

5 Name your top five architectural favorites.

Alhambra in Spain
El Castillo pyramid in Chichen Itza
Taj Mahal in India
Forbidden City in China
Malbork Castle in Poland

Film

6 Is there a bias in the arts community against family fare. I see movies like Shrek, Monsters Inc and the Incredibles as examples of extremely well made movies.

I agree there is a bias. But I also think that many family movies would be a lot better if they also had their ‘’adult versions’’ (a bit like ‘’widescreen’’ and ‘’full screen’’ versions) for parents. You bring your kids to a threatre. You park them in a theatre playing the ‘’kiddie’’ version of Shrek, and you go next door to see the ‘’NC-17’’ version.

7 There are some movies with nudity that are snoozes. I slept through Bolero and Showgirls due to bad writing. Is writing the key to a good movie. You seemed to like Eyes Wide Shut, I found the movie a bore.

I agree about Belero (and all Bo Derek films, without exception). But Showgirls was a lot of fun (of the ‘’so bad, it’s hilarious’’ variety). ‘’Eyes Wide Shut’’ was a truly hypnotic experience. The kind of hypnotism that puts some (like you) to sleep and others (like me) to pure extasy.

8 We have a house film snob ( Poultry) who would like to hear your thoughts on Almodvar. Are there any of his films you would recommend?

All Almodovar’s films are good, except ‘’Tie Me Up Tie Me Down’’, ‘’High Heels’’ and ‘’The Flower of My Secret‘’. In the 80’s, his films were funny, crazy, messy and surprising. In the 90’s, he experimented with different genres, with very uneven results (all the above-mentioned flops date from this middle period). Since 1999, his films are mature masterpieces, expertly mixing serious melodrama with humor and sensuality.

9 What are your views of film genres that we never see discused on your blog such as Musicals, Horror, Martial Arts Films and Comedy?

Unfortunately, the best musical films were made between 1932 and 1952, when no nudity was allowed on screen. I would love to see a nude Ginger Rogers dancing with Fred Astaire. Who knows, since it’s now possible to colorize movies, maybe one day will be technologically possible to undress Ginger Rogers or Cyd Charisse.

I did discuss a great erotic martial art film from Hong Kong, ‘’Women On The Run’’ and a great erotic horror film, ‘’Hostel’’ (2006). I also love such great erotic horror movies like ‘’Nekromantik’’ (1987) and ‘’Freeze Me’’ (2000). There are plenty of great erotic comedies as well, like ‘’Confetti’’ (2006).

10 Is the age of Epic films like the English Patient, Dr Zhivago, Ben Hur a thing of the past? I would note that the Lord of the Rings trilogy qualifies as an epic.

Definitely not. Epic films were always popular and they will remain so. I just hope they will loose some of those epic clothes. ‘’Excalibur’’ is a far greater film than ‘’Ben Hur’’ for precisely that reason.

11 What are your thoughts on the Superhero movies. The Spiderman Franchise seems to do quite well due to well constructed villans and plot lines.

I hate Superhero movies, with the exception of most Batman movies. The first two Batmans and the last one were great films. But all those Supermans, Hulks and Spider-Mans are worthless, boring trash.

12 Name the top five over rated and under rated films of all time?

Overrated (I am simply picking the worst Oscar-winners in the last 40 years) :

Beautiful Mind
Gladiator
The English Patient
Driving Miss Daisy
In The Heat Of The Night

Underrated (I am not listing undeservedly obscure films, only well-known films that were unjustly maligned):

Apocalypto
Starship Troopers
The Name of the Rose
Year of the Dragon
Heaven’s Gate
Zabriskie Point

13 Do you also watch older films? I was surprised to see how many of my readers remembered Superfly, Harry and Tonto, Black Sunday and some of the older films that are referenced in passing.

You call that old films ? My favorite old movies are ‘’Cabiria’’ (1914), ‘’The Birth of a Nation’’ (1915), ‘’Les Vampires’’ (1915), ‘’Haxan’’ (1921) and ‘’Foolish Wives’’ (1922).

Anti Communism

14 Has anti-Americanism become reflexive amongst the far left?

Is the Earth round ? Of course. But there is nothing personal here. The far leftists hated Spain from 1492 until 1650’s (and thought England was a brave little nation to fight against them), and they hated England from 1650’s until 1950’s (and thought United States was a brave little nation to rebel against them)…

15 Is the far left a religion? As a pseudo-religion are its true believers oblivious to logic, facts, history and sanity?

It’s FAR worse than religion. At least religious people care only about certain, non-economic, aspects of life (and when they care about ALL aspects of life, like the Hassidic Jews, or the Catholic nuns, at least they don’t force others to be like them). But Communists apply their Marxist religion to all aspects of life, including the way toilet paper should be produced and sold, and impose it on everybody by force. Communism is like a religious monastery, except nobody shoots you in the back when you try to leave a monastery…

16 Is there a hard core anti-semitic element on the left?

Is there sex in porno movies ? Communism, from the very beginning in 1917 was an alliance between Jewish traitors of their own religion and rabid anti-semites. They worked together during the Soviet Revolution and during World War II, but otherwise they purged each other with abandon (usually the anti-semites were on top, but not always, in Poland between 1945 and 1949, the shoe was on the other foot). Things aren’t that different now. If the far left would ever gain power, the Osamas would quickly purge the Noam Chomskys from their ranks (or, less likely, vice versa)…

17 I see a mental health defect with many on the far left. Is there a mental health aspect to people who are prone to idiotic conspiracies, such as the mostly anti-semitic 9-11 fare.

It’s not a mental health defect. It’s a disease that can attack anybody, anywhere. Nobody is immune to the Communist disease, although having a perfectly honest, democratic government would definitely help. That’s why United States has far less idiotic conspiracy theories than totalitarian countries, but it still has them. If Bush honestly told the American people: ‘’We need to go to Iraq to secure our energy needs, and to make sure that Shiites and Sunnis fight each other instead of uniting to fight against us’’, there would be far less idiotic conspiracy theories…

18 Has the far left Disneyfied Islamic history and culture. Theological law placed on nonbelivers with Jim Crow elements, amputations and capital punishment for gays and rape victims does not seem to be humane.

Not really. The Islamic culture in the early years (between 630 and 1300’s) was truly remarkable and far less oppressive than all the other contemporary cultures. It was still very agressive militarily (conquering half of the World), but they invariably imposed a system that was more free and open than the one they destroyed. Things only changed during the Renaissance and the Reformation. Christianity slowly evolved for the better, while Islam slowly degenerated into its present, sorry state.

19 Are Communists oblivious to the human toll and history of subversion and treason in their own history? I often get perplexed far left types who can not understand the hatred of many for their handiwork.

There are two types of Communists. The Stalins and the Trotskys. The Trotskys organize the revolution, and once they succeed, they are killed by the Stalins, who impose a system far more oppressive than the previous one. The Stalins perfectly know the human toll, but they see it as a necessary evil to achieve their leftist nirvana. They simply deny those crimes. The Trotskys don’t deny them, but they don’t feel guilty about them, because they are among their chief victims. Consequently, don’t expect any apologies from either of them.

20 Is the notion that we can create Utopia in this world flawed and sometimes dangerous?

Flawed and SOMETIMES dangerous ? More like ‘’Evil and ALWAYS deadly’’

21 What is your response to the Communists who claim that the Khmer Rouge fiasco in Cambodia had nothing to do with Marx?

Well, I am not surprised, because many Christians also claim that the Spanish Inquisition had nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Actually, I am glad when they claim that. It proves that they are Trotskys and not Stalins. I will take a Trotsky over a Stalin anytime…

22 I am amazed at how many arts types sympathise with a movement that surpresses Artistic freedom? How do arts and letters types rationalize this contradiction?

There is no contradiction. Art, like Communism, tries to re-write reality. A Communist is like a mad artist, except his canvas is the real world, where real people live. An artist can paint over a person, or leave an actor on the cutting room floor. A Communist does the same, but with real people.

23 Groups supported by the far left FARC, Hezbollah, Taliban are all deeply involved in drug dealing? Do far left types address this at all? Is Drug dealing for Social Justice just another contradiction like liberation via starvation.

I disagree with the foundation with your question. Drugs shouldn’t be illegal. Governments that ban drug production, trade and sale are Communist in that specific area. The real contradiction is between free-market capitalism and the interdiction of drugs.

24 Do the far left over romanticize terrorists as oppressed? Even today we have unrepentant spoiled terrorists teaching in American Universities named Ayers and Dorn.

The problem isn’t so much with romanticizing terrorists as oppressed, but with romanticizing the oppressed. There is nothing admirable about being oppressed. I don’t admire Jews like Janusz Korczak who went willingly to the gas chambers. I admire Jews like Abba Kovner, who fought Nazis in the Vilna woods, or Mordecai Anielewicz, who led the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

25 Why do so many true believers flock to your site? Some of your commentors praise of Cuba. This borders on incoherent lunacy, all of you can read what you are told to read. People just happen to risk death fleeing the workers paradise.

Good question. I would love to think that it’s because they have doubts about their commitment to Communism, and they are curious about a different point of view. Most of them believe what I used to believe 25 years ago…

Or maybe they just like to be shocked…

Sonia

Those were great answers to some difficult questions. As far as Eyes

because I have more interest in a NY Deli sandwich than watching the dreadful acting of Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman.

I do not know if the work is quite ready for NC-17 Shrek.

Beak,

Or maybe there is something you would like to confess?

Remember I worked in the world of high fashion where nudity was so common it was almost trite.

So I take it your political outlook is primarily libertarian, sonia (nudity/drugs good)? If so, do you think that everyone (at all levels) in our society is capable of not falling into a cycle of drug addiction/ dependence and of establishing the long-term bonds (marriage) necessary to raise healthy children?

And speaking of children, what's your view about "age of consent" laws, are kids capable of deciding for themselves when to smoke/drink or engage in sexual activity?

I know it's a loaded question...

beakerkin said...

Farmer I think you just moved us into R territory.

I always prefered consent laws than took the age of the participants into account. A 16 year old having relations with a 14 year old is different from a 30 year old with a 14. I know the laws of Israel are based upon that.

Anonymous said...

Actually the "loaded" part of my question comes from the fact that a certain percentage of our adult citizen population have the mental abilities of children, even at forty and fifty years of age... and therefore are not capable of making "informed choices" about things like drugs... and marriage.

And if the current societal restrictions were "dropped" in favor of a more "libertarian" system, would likely add significant numbers to the proportion of our population in poverty, addicted, and raising kids out-of-wedlock, living on the social safety net.

Cuz if its' legal, it must be okay to do, right?

beakerkin said...

Farmer

I am not a Liberterian, but I do love them because they drive Commies nuts. The drug laws we have now are insane and do not work.

Are you ready to jail a pregnant woman who is caught drunk or drugged for endangering the welfare of a child. I would love to see Nanc or TMW answer that. It is legal for a pregnant woman to get drunk.

I have never been in favor of making the USA more like Amsterdam.
Prostitution is legal in Las Vegas but regulated.

The mere fact something is legal doesn't make it adviseable.

sonia said...

Farmer,

do you think that everyone (at all levels) in our society is capable of not falling into a cycle of drug addiction/ dependence

Many people are indeed incapable of resisting addiction. But making drugs illegal doesn’t help them in any way. It simply makes drugs more expensive for them, forcing them to steal to acquire them. In an ideal world, cocaine would cost as much as cigarettes or vine, drug addicts would be treated like alcoholics, and countries like Bolivia, Columbia and Afghanistan would be happy and prosperous satisfying a stable demand.

do you think that everyone (at all levels) in our society is capable of establishing the long-term bonds (marriage) necessary to raise healthy children?

There is no connection between that and drug legalization/nudity. True, drug addicts make poor parents, but so do alcoholics. And nudists can be as good parents as those obsessed with clothes.

what's your view about "age of consent" laws, are kids capable of deciding for themselves when to smoke/drink or engage in sexual activity?

I am a parent myself, so I have no problems with ‘’age of consent’’ laws. None at all. Of course, in my particular case, ‘’age of consent’’ meant that my daughters were only allowed to wear clothes at home once they reached a certain age… As for sexual activity, I think 18 is a bit late for most people, but I certainly won’t be telling other parents how to raise their children. My daughters were allowed to have sex at 13 (and only with partners their own age, of course).

Beak,

The mere fact something is legal doesn't make it adviseable

100% agree.

beakerkin said...

I am the last person to advise anyone but thirteen sounds to young. Of course this would make me a hypocrite of sorts. I think seventeen or sixteen is better.

I leave such matters to those who raise their own kids.

Anonymous said...

I'm with Beak on this one, although I think Sex is best left for Marriage, but 13 is way to young.

I've got no problem w/casual recreational drug users or sexual bacchannalias for responsible adults or even underage kids who's parent's believe are capable of acting in a mature and responsible manner. What I do have a problem with is with people who think that "everyone" should be allowed to do whatever they like and that any "society" could afford to legalize behaviors that would ruin 10-15% (if not more) of their population (IQ's under 85).

Most addicts don't steal because the cost of drugs is too high. They steal because they'd rather do drugs and/or get drunk than work to earn the $4 a cheap bottle of wine costs. They'd rather get a $50 cocaine high than catch a $10 vodka hangover. And they'd rather keep a buzz on all day than hold down a straight-and-sober 9-5 job. Make drugs cheap... you'll simply have that many more users... supply & demand - Economics 101.

And many young girls today would rather have illegitimate kids by serial boyfriends and go on welfare than work at Wal-Mart and buy condoms.

For what kind of "responsible behavior" can you expect from adults with the mental ages of 12 year olds without anyone to "supervise" them but the government and a society that refuses to maintain any "volunatry" moral standards of conduct... who need "laws" enacted over them to prevent irresponsible adults from "smoking" in restaurants and thereby damaging the health of those around them.

We have to have these "Nanny State" laws for every bad-habit because libertarians and cynics insist on the right to do whatever the 'H they feel like in public... including walking around naked all day.

Go ahead and walk around naked at home. Why do you have to do it in front of the world in public? I don't get it... it's like you don't give a crap about the people who have no self-control and need someone to set an example of responsible behavior for them to emulate.

I hate to say this sonia, but you remind me of Diogenes of Sinope... who thought it proper to masturbate in the Agora and only wished he could cure his hunger as easily.

Rant-off. I figure sonia needed at least one right-wing kook to blast her... so I volunteered. I'm gonna go put on some clothes now. I feel stupid dressed like this.

I watch very few films, simply because in most cases, I have already read the book or novel years before.

Almost always, the movie is a huge disappointment and unrecognizable as the creation of the author.

It takes about 100 pages of screenplay to make a two hour movie. You can see what happens to novels that run several hundred pages.

Characters and plot development become two dimensional representations in a two dimensional medium.

The movies;
Beautiful Mind
Gladiator
The English Patient
Driving Miss Daisy
In The Heat Of The Night

Definitely overrated and filled with a screen version of what is supposed to be angst but comes across as constipation.

I would add;
Out of Africa
Grapes of Wrath
Anything with that fat sweating buffoon, Alec Baldwin.
Dances with Wolves

Apocalypto:
Haven't seen it but would like to.

Starship Troopers:
I was definitely disappointed by this movie. In Robert Heinlein's novel, this was a story of coming of age, duty and patriotism. Maybe I set my sights too high but I found it disappointing.

The Name of the Rose;
I would agree with Sonias assessment of this movie.

Year of the Dragon;
So so.

Heaven's Gate;
A real snoozer.

Zabriskie Point;
Didn't see.

I would add;
Blade Runner
The Wall
Open Range (the only Kevin Cosner movie I can tolerate)

Sonia claims drugs should be legalized. While I'd hate to see the initial outcome of that, imagine the long-term effects, like the drastic decline of demand. It would potentially put bin Laden out of the heroin business and the drug cartels in South America would go bankrupt because commercial trade would take over the distribution system.

I have always been a believer in that if you remove something from society that is illegal and suddenly make it legal, the desire to have that illegal substance goes away.

Today I was reading Richard Fletcher. He surmised that one reason for some tolerance in Islam in Spain--having infidels hold office, for example--was that the Muslim tribes couldn't manage to govern as they'd new had experience in managing an empire. Interesting supposition on Fletcher's part. He also pointed out that one Muslims were trained to govern, they were more inclined to impose shari'a law, which is strict adherence to the Koran.

I agree with you. However as I was 14, this does make me a hypocrite.

People who think that the human "demand" for pleasure would ever decrease if drugs were made legal and sex more available... aren't thinking straight.

I know far more about your site than I am given credit for. If you would like your own interview this can be arranged.

You rabid dog John Brown still spams this site. How is it that far left types can opperate spam free? I guess free speech for me but none for thee must be a "progressive value".

Do note when I am in interview mode I am polite and business like.
In a forum or comment section I am no longer functioning as a host.

If you prefer to have Florian interview you I am sure he would be up to the task. He is quite good and has improved markedly.
