Educational reform is too late

The sad part in the entire talk about fixing our colleges is that it is too late. Our colleges are stuck in an outdated model that has produced worthless degrees. Rather then having our graduates compette our educational system has served to protect worthless high paying jobs for unemployable Marxist hacks.

The basic problem is the 64 credit liberal arts base needs to go. Our business students need extra accounting, finance and management classes. Moreover Social Science majors should all be required to take 32 credits in business credits minimum.

What is the value of Noam Chomsky and Rigoberta Menchu in IT applications or to a Wall Street Wiz 0. It is time to refocus our energy into producing competitive students. The useless expensive scholarship produced in the social sciences departments escalates costs for no reason. The mass layoff of far left types in victims studies departments will be an added bonus.

Do not hold your breath for Jesse Jackson to lead the protest.

He Ho Marxist hacks go to go
It and business equals money

or

No dollars for useless scholarship

Beak,
The basic problem is the 64 credit liberal arts base needs to go.

I'm with you there!

I got my B.A. ins 1972, with a solid major in Spanish and a teaching certificate which required multiple courses specific to methods (pretty much useless in an actual classroom) and operating AV equipment. No general-education degree for me! Thanks to my mother, who was an IRS auditor, I learned my accounting skills at home in practical application.

When I was principal and responsible for hiring teachers, I learned to stay away from the general B.A. degree and to hire teachers who had real majors other than education.

Graduate with a B.A. today, and what you've got isn't much more than an 8th-grade education in 1940.

A recent article in the WaPo decried the pathetic reading skills at the secondary and university levels. I may blog that article in the near future.

The East (India, etc.) is running away with the technical know-how.

As in all areas of US life, we need to get the gubmint out. No more handouts.

Let people finance their kids education DIRECTLY and there will be quite a bit more oversight of these buffoons!!

In other words, if instead of the gubmint subsidies, you had to write a check for $10,000 for your kid to take a course in comparative race basket weaving relations, most people WOULDN'T!!!

If that same kid couldn't depend on you to write the check, he wouldn't be willing to work 2 part time jobs to pay for that useless course!!!!

My neighbor, a principal in the Fairfax County Public School System, was visitng my house a few minutes ago. I took the opportunity to read her part of your posting here. She told me about how the school at which she is the new administrator will not even apply for new computers. The personnel don't get it--they don't think that technology is important. Granted, this is an elementary school, but still...

It's sad how the liberal arts base has gone from foundational courses that taught kids about the value and purpose of civilization to being a bunch of useless, feel-good PC gruel. Does that kind of curriculum help anyone? It only helps those who want a populace which is easy to control. It does nothing for those paying for the courses.

Mr. BTIP,

Isn't football that thing the Italians just won through outside the box thinking??

Why would we want that in US schools???

College: Go into student loan debt for 20 years so that you can make more money?

Not to mention that going to college is a dime-a-dozen idea anymore.

Anonymous,

HELL NO!

Never confuse football (a sport) with soccer (a hobby).

Brooke,

You didn't borrow money from the US government to learn about how evil the US government is, did you?
