Should Colleges have racially segregated dorms

There are several colleges with all black and hispanic housing areas. This voluntary segregation is never critiqued. The notion of having an all white dorm is clearly not allowed. Why do our quote " Progressive " Universities endorse Jim Crow on Campus. I do understand a no alcohol section as this is a place reserved for serious students.

Our enlightened universities have speech codes, segregated living areas and are staffed by the old Bolshevik Couch Potato crew. Something stinks in accademia and it is time that the taxpayers started demanding reforms and value for our tax dollars.

Beamish in 08, Ducky to be deported and 167 changing formats yet again.

No! Aside from sexually or non-alcoholic dorms, you need to learn how to deal with people of many backgrounds. This whole issue stinks of leftist race "protectionism", just proves who the true racists are! Not only that, but it encourages an attitude of entitlement and superiority! Divide and conquer!

i don't really like people all that much so i'd require my very own dorm.

I understand a section for serious students with no alcohol or parties. The rest of the segregation is absurd .

Cornel has a Ujamma house and it does not admit whites. Lets see bigotry is okay as long as it is endorsed by Marx.

The Duck should also be segregated as treasonous Marxist types belong in Gitmo.

Oh Nanc, no I didn't know! I remember him as such a wise and insightful man. Loved his "Hymn for the Bride". Didn't get to watch him very much, but got a lot out of his teachings whenever I could.
Question, am I a whiner? That is not my intent. If not I will ignore plucked duck.

I went to a college that had "segregated" dorms. There is a reason why I put it in quotes because to outsiders it might seem like its segregated but in actuallity it is not. Most dorms in this situation have programs going on within the dorm. At my college, it was an African American Cultural program. Naturally, most of the people who were interested in joining the program were African American (and to a lesser degree Latinos and Caucassians). So it might appear that the dorm is segregated but really its not; its just most people who were interested in the program were of a certain race.

What should also be noted is that even though the dorm was mostly African/Carribean American students there were was a significant minority of people of different nationalities. So it wasn't totally segregated. Before I came to the university, I had the same questions as you did but after I saw what the program was about and it in action, I really didn't hae a problem with it. I didn't see it as being much different from the program I was in which concentrated on science and technology. The same situation occured in this program as well except the majority of the students were males and the minority was females. Its funny people don't bat an eye when there are gender disparities but go nuts when there are racial ones.

beakerkin said...

Bum

I do not know what purpose a segregated dorm serves. However if it open to all this is not as bad.
A dorm that excluded blacks would not be percieved in the same manner and rightly so.

bum said...

There isn't any exclusion though. All people are welcomed to join, its just certain people of a certain group seem to be more interested in joining the group. I don't see how thats segregation especially since there isn't any pressure to exclude any group.

Why bother then at all?

There used to be male/female only enclosed bathing areas along Sydney shore.
The last male bathing place was disolved by a court order sometimes in the mid 80's (it is general now).
Somehow there are still female baths only left.
Not that I care too much but there's something wrong with the whole "equality" principle.
Of course, there always will be a number of "progressive" people who find all logical explanations for such exemptions to the rule.
This is where the whole "equality" issue becomes plain mockery.

bum said...

This is becoming a much bigger issue than it should be. the programs are not exclusionary. They are treated just like any other program. For instance, you could join a math theme floor, science theme floor, european history theme floor, or little green aliens are going to come and destroy us one day floor. The point is, these themes are open to everyone. Its not mandatory that you join such a program but the program is out there if you are interested.

I can't emphasize this enough: just because tha majority of people in a cultural program floor is made up of people from that culture does NOT mean people from other cultures are not welcome to join it and learn about it. The program floor is more like a history class and you are welcome to come and learn about it. It does not put down any other group just informs you about the cultural styles of that program. I really was like many of you guys and when I first read about it, I thought wtf? Isn't this segregation weather it be voluntary or not? But when I came to college I saw it was nothing of the kind. Its just a theme floor w/ a cultural background which makes absolutely no effort to exclude anyone. If anything, they try to invite everyone to join. I don't know how it was when you guys attended college but for me, you were allowed to choose where you want to live and if these folks choose to live on a floor or a dorm w/ a cultural theme so be it. Don't look at it as selfsegration but rather they want to learn more about the program and what its all about.

Now this may not be the norm at all universities, but at mine, thats what it was about. Other places it might be different (i.e. MIT has "Chocolate City").

bum said...

Are there Blacks only dorms in the US?

Oh and again - these dorms are not 100% or even 80% made up of one demographic group. And don't say, well what if it was, because it rarely ever is. I want to say never but I am sure someone will come up w/ some obscure college out there where I am wrong (not even Chocolate City i cited above is 100% black and latino).

The weasel is interesting in its approach to catching prey, because sometimes it will perform a "hypnotic dance" in front of the victim, which appears to mesmerise it. This behaviour is not prevalent in other species.

As amusing as it is to watch, the dance, fortunately for us, only truly affects basilisks.

-FJ

-FJ

Anonymous said...

Of course, you don't see many basilisks around anymore, so hey, whatever floats your boat. One dance is as good as another... although I suppose an hypnotic dance affects the right hemisphere a little more than the left. Isn't that the hemisphere that turns people into "socialists"? My old buddy Adolph was said to be able to produce a similar affect... must have been something a dancing weasel himself.

beakerkin said...

Ducky Freedom now raises a valid point. Bum from Jersey explains that the area is open to all and that there are Math sections.

My guess is a white theme would not even be permited by the University for obvious reasons. What a white theme would be is unknown as there are hundreds of cultures that fit into the spectrum.

I do not like the whole notion at all. Is there an Italian dorm or a Cuban section ?

I prefer the theme sections and understand a cafeteria for special dietary needs that does not exclude outsiders. A Halal kitchen is fine as long as Herb Sixpack can eat there if he chooses.

Weasie do let the door hit you on the backside as you depart. My sitemeter picks up your frequent visits. I have mentioned before this blog does not cater to the criminally insane. Keep up the good work and some day you will have a mental pathology named after you.

nanc, OMG! We lived in San Jose and went to church in Milpitas ('62-66 & '70-75) and lived in Sunnyvale from ('79-82). My older sister is currently living in Palo Alto, and my younger brother lives in Scott's Valley (Santa Cruz hills). My sister went to UC Santa Cruz for a year '68, but "dropped out" to follow a "guru". Fortunately, she became "born again" and is now an RN (semi-retired). I commuted to SF for 3 years, which even at that time took less time to travel the 50 miles from Sunnyvale, than Sunnyvale to any point east, west or especially "south". We used to buy 5 pints of strawberries or cherries for $1.00. Now, I doubt if you could even FIND a strawberry patch or an orchard. Like they say, you can't go back home.

It was tmw, FJ. Sorry! When we were in Santa Cruz, 1991-95, we went to church in Watsonville, we could still get fruit and veggies there and Martinelli still had thier apple juice plant there! Remember the little glass apples? There was one orchard and stand left in east San Jose, got wonderful cherries there! If you took the 17 into 880 you traveled about 80mph unless it was rush hour, then 5-10 if you were lucky with no accidents or fires in Los Gatos hills. When we left, Ben's boss bought a 1 acre lot with a condemned cottage(1 bedroom) for 1.8 million dollars! Watsonville was pretty much the same except for buildup around the edges, the farms weren't selling.

I wonder what the average IQ of residents living downtown New Orleans was prior to Katrina. If it was anything like Baltimore, no wonder it was such a disaster (and of course, the Baltimore study was done long before the Katrina incident)! The problem at FEMA was that "political correctness" kept them from planning to have to evacuate a huge concentration of "mental subnormals" from the area. They had "assumed" the residents would have at least an "average" mental capacity (100 IQ), not an average of 70-75.

tmw,

Sorry for the confusion. I remember when on I-280 they used to open up the "shoulders" for traffic during rush hours. What a mess (that was my alternate up to SF when 101 was clogged). And I'll bet you used to get a lot of artichokes when you drove to Watsonville for church. A buddy of mine once tried to invent a "better way" of removing its' heart. Never worked though. And I can't tell you how many hours I used to spend at Sunset Beach, either laying in the sand, or up to my chest in the water "clamming". As for Los Altos Hills, I remember a friend of mine moving into a 7-level "split-level" there in '74, purchased for the then "outrageous" sum of $200K. My uncle had to sell his place in South San Jose back in '83 just down the street from "Frontier Village" to pay his "taxes". The place had been in his family since the late nineteenth century. He took his house apart (an old Victorian) and put it back together up in the Sierra foothills near Placerville. He passed back in '90, but my aunt still lives there. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Muslims demand their rights, and require separate facilities where they do not have to associate with the unclean. According to Muslim doctrine, all Kafirs (non-believers) are 'najis' (Arabic for 'filth' or 'vermin')

Take a look at

http://www.al-islam.org/laws/najisthings.html

"108. The entire body of a Kafir, including his hair and nails, and all liquid substances of his body, are najis."

Muslims regard Kafirs as filth. Kafirs are vermin infesting Allah's earth. Muslims don't actually tell us that to our faces, but they certainly preach it in their mosques and madrassahs, and publish it on their websites.

The doctrine of 'najis Kafirs' confirms (if confirmation were needed) that Muslim hatred of unbelievers is intrinsic to their 'religion'. A Kafir doesn't need to DO anything to offend a Muslim, his very existence is enough of an affront.

Ooops, Los Altos, Los Gatos... same place (not really). Last time I talked to one of my buddies, he was still carrying an $800K note on his tract-home in Cupertino. He's just now having his 1st child... and mine are almost all raised and "out of the house".... one left (and she leaves next fall). It doesn't "pay" to try and raise a family there anymore. It's a community of DINK's (Dual-Income, No Kids)....thanks to the environmental movement. All my other childhood "friend's" (with the one exception) never got married OR raised any kids. My younger brother either.

Oh yes, loved the drive but one summer there was a landslide that closed all but 1 lane for a couple of months! Every 1/2 hr. a State Trooper would lead a train of vehicles one way then afterwards another trooper would lead another train the other way! Hilarious. Big Sur was cut off for months because of landslides. Ben took this great shot on one of the promentories with fog coming in, beautiful! We used to go to Rancho San Antonio to hike
, still to many people! But we did see a bobcat, Ca. quail(love thier topknots), turkey and rattlesnakes. Had a pair of kestrels nest across the street every year. The Ca. garter snakes were impressive (the ones not eaten by the kestrels). And Roaring Camp, with the Old West days with all the reenactors camping out oldtime style! Or taking the railroad up to the top of the mountain so the children could pick out thier pumpkins. Ben worked in Scotts Valley so we knew a few back roads. They finally put a concrete barrier between the lanes but didn't fence the sides. At least after the barriers you got fewer morning and evening headons! But it didn't help the poor deer! Did go to Moffett Field for an open house, that was special because my Dad had been stationed there just before WWII. There were at least 5,000 people inside the dirigible hanger for exhibits! Lost my husband for 3 hours. Met some wonderful people there, just couldn't bring them back to Fla. with us!

FJ- Remember the UCSC mascot? And how the girls that went there were called "slugs" for single, lesbian until graduation? We would go out to the lighthouse and watch the rollers coming in. And go to the pier and eat seafood at Stagnero's, or go out on one of Stagnero's boats to whale watch? Go to Henry Cowell just past Roaring Camp to walk among the redwoods? Or picnic along the San Laurenzo river. Where the children (4 and 6) got a view of a nudist sunbather! Biology 101.

San Diego was where we went once a year to get around some "normal" people, it was beautiful in spring with all the bushes and flowers blooming. Sea World and Balboa Park were must sees! Also the zoo and wildlife park. For a F Family Reunion we stayed on the Embarcadero across from the Star of India. Toured the fleet, saw an aircraft carrier, you don't realize how HUGH those things are until you pass by on a tour boat!

My guess is a white theme would not even be permited by the University for obvious reasons. What a white theme would be is unknown as there are hundreds of cultures that fit into the spectrum.

I do not like the whole notion at all. Is there an Italian dorm or a Cuban section ?

While black and African American are used interchangeably, from a sociological perspective they mean two entirely different things. Black is a word used to define a reace while African American (while it too can be used as a word to define race) is primarily meant be used a phrase to define a culture. That being said, there were other cultural program (not dorms) floors at my university. I remember the Latin American program (the women there - so beautiful), Southeast Asian, Asian, European, and probably others that I can't remember at the moment. Also, there were Italian clubs and such and probably could have been a floor program as well if there was enough interest. You know, its probably better to refer to it as a club because even though the dorm's floor theme was centered around a specific culture, your really only did activities (which were voluntary) twice a month or so.

That being said, after reading more of your comments, I do understand what you are saying. I am kind of wondering myself if what happened if we extended our program floors from cultural, science, literature, etc, etc, to also include religous programs. There certainly would be interest and the way the world is right now - would that be the best idea? So I understand your point but still had no problem w/ the cultural program floors at my University.

New Orleans compounds its history of Kingfish spoils system corruption by continuing to elect Democrats to positions of power, their bargain basement bidder levee system collapses the day after a major hurricane swept close by on its way to smashing the southern coast of Mississippi and Alabama to bits, and when people run to the places their duly(?) elected Democrat civic leaders claim to have spent money stocking food and medicine in and find those "supplies" as empty as Noam Chomsky's head, it's "racism" and not local incompetence?

Could you imagine the clusterfuck if a hurricane actually ever hit New Orleans?

Ducky's reverse racism is not surprising.

I have been a victim of racism and racist violence more times than I could count. Growing up in Hollis, NY (in the same neighborhood that the rap group "Run DMC" is from) I was subjected to racism on a regular basis. Even though I am hispanic, I am light skinned and unless someone vouched for me, I was a moving target.

Your references to me as "a white boy... whose absolute power is threatened" is way off base. I grew up in total poverty and know nothing of priveledge. Yet you claim to use reason as opposed to stereotype casting?

Do you know what it is like to not be wanted in your own neighborhood because of your skin color? Do you know what it is like to be discriminated against and physically attacked for the same reason?

I know what "exclusion" is. You have no right to say such things to me.

no, he doesn't fern. i am olive complected and lived in a couple of areas of san diego as a child that were about half black (then) and the "honkies" and hispanics would have to be sent home five to ten minutes earlier than the blacks because of racial violence - them against us. we had to be buttholes and elbows if we wanted to make it home safely for a time. it wasn't much fun. i remember a couple of times hiding out at a neighbor's or a store until the dust settled.

i never understood why they hated us personally. still don't.

tmw,

Used to camp amongst the redwoods w/ the scouts at Big Basin State Park (off 9, I think). Used to go swimming in a creek w/ a waterfall just a little below Lick Observatory on the hill (tresspassing on private property, of course...although there was a little State Park a few miles upstream). If we wanted to hike, we usually went up to Alum Rock Park (my uncle had pictures of the "street car" that used to travel back & forth from downtown SJ. My dad was USAF, and stationed at the STC on the other side of Moffett Field NAS. My next door neighbor was an ET there for NASA, who used to sneak us into the "small hangers" to peer into U-2 cockpits. And the annual air shows there were awesome! Used to love the Blue Angels! I used to hunt those "cute quail" over at Hunter Liggett... and deer on the "landward side" of Big Sur. I used to camp with my two aunts for 2-3 weeks in the summer up at Sutters Mill on the South Fork, American River and "tube" my way down. And of course, we used to free-dive for abalone in Monterey Bay.

And nanc, my brother-in-law was stationed in San Diego for a couple of years (COD mechanic, USN). Used to visit him occassionally (although he has since retired and lives in upstate NY now). About the only thing I remember though is La Jolla. When I used to travel their on business, I seldom left airport plaza...never really knew my way around anyplace but there and the tourist traps of "Old Town".

In San Diego we also went to the Scripps aquarium, that was fun. Monteray Bay Aquarium was a favorite trip! Loved the sea otters, went to Pidgeon Point lighthouse once. Did you ever get up to Bean Hollow beach? Used to "sneak" pockets full of bean pebbles home to the aquarium we had. What blew me away was in Santa Cruz, summer was the worst season because we lived 1/2 block to close to the Pacific, so we had fog all day except for 15 -20 mins. around 2:30pm! We were there when Fort Ord went back to Monteray county. One of the saddest things was the children being taken out of thier homes or while just walking around(i.e. Polly Klaus et al) you couldn't let your children play in the front yard without an adult very visibly present! My 2 freaked when we got back to Fla. and we sent them out on thier bikes to meet other children alone! One of the reasons we left, the constant vigilence was tiring. Even at night we had to leave bedroom doors open to hear if someone was trying to get in! That is an unnatural way to raise a child!

Anonymous said...

We used to drive to Summit [Clark's(?)] in the SC mountains and peer down to check the fog-levels before deciding whether or not it was worth it to complete the trip to the beach... I don't remember Bean Hollow Beach, but I do remember Natural Bridges. My step-mother lived in Capitola before my Dad remarried... and my father owned an art gallery in one of the small towns near Santa Cruz in the "touristy" part of town... they used to have an annual Begonia Festival there... don't quite remember the town, but it was rather "infamous" for its' "nude" beaches.

The crime you describe sounds horrible. When we lived in San Jose in the 60's and even into the early 70's, we never used to lock the doors. My parents never knew where I was... and I seldom got back indoors till after midnight. Talk about a different time and a different world.

My brother and I moved East to raise families. Those family members who stayed out West, never had any kids.

Come to think of it, my nephew was abducted for a few hours in San Diego hills many years ago (early 90's).... and molested, of course. Hmmmm. Hadn't thought of that in years.

-FJ

FJ- Yes the crimes were terrible! One 14 yr. old girl was kidnapped, raped and murdered while walking her dog! she was only a block or two from her home. There was a lot of that in the '90's!
Natural Bridges was loads of fun to go to during Monarch butterfly festival. It was cool in the mornings so they were all hanging off the eucalyptus trees like leaves! The Begonia Festival was still going strong when we left, huge crowds, lots of arts and crafts. The local community college(forgot the name) had a farmers market every Sat. in thier parking lot during the harvest season. Got to know Peruvian Blue and Yukon Gold potatos, plus some rather esoteric Asian veggies. We grew the biggest zucchini and banana squash I have ever seen! The Thistle Hut was one of our favorite stands on the way to Monteray, strawberries, tomatos, artichokes, you know what I'm talking about! It was funny to see the left, right differences in the towns and country. After the '89 earthquake(which was centered in the Forest of the Nicean Marks) Watsonville police and firefighters were helping the store owners to salvage thier stock as much as possible. The Santa Cruz police and firefighters forbade and even arrested people for salvaging "anything" from thier homes or shops! The center of Santa Cruz was still a mess when we left in'95! You couldn't even park downtown because so much was cordoned off! Watsonville you could barely tell there had been an earthquake. Go figure!

Were you thinking of Portola? Seaside? Capitola-By-The-Sea? Capitola had a very extensive touristy shopping area that was heavily New Age and witchcraft. Santa Cruz had the area near the amusment park that had shops. Of course the pier was a big draw with all the sea lions roaring and stinking up the place.

I think it was Capitola (looked it up on Mapquest), but it might have been Portola. I simply remember that the town was on a relatively steep hill, and it was a "walk-down"... and I always thought it curious that people would want to sunbathe "nude" or "topless" in such a congested environment. You'd have thought they would have sought out a more "secluded" environment. I know it wasn't Santa Cruz...the roller coaster/ board walk has been there FOREVER.

Me, I almost always went to Sunset (and that was NOT a nude beach, LOL!). The $1 "parking fee" and limited access definitely kept out the riff-raff... and at that time, you almost had the entire beach to yourself (and it was a long-long beach w/ a power plant visible at the southern end.) It was also a great place for digging up large (5" or better) Pismo Clams at "low tide".... we used to "limit out" every time we went. It was a great place to go jogging as well, and if you really wanted to get away from people, there were lots of dunes to "hide-out" in and be left in relative "peace". The hang gliders used to launch themselves from the hills above the dunes there... and people with remote control sail planes used to fly them there... good "updrafts" coming off the ocean. No surfers either. Wooo-Hooo!

San Diego seems like a retirement community or Club Med resort to me, but its all relative to what you are used to.

Actually the neighborhood I grew up in was a picnic compared to the projects of Red Hook where my parents grew up.

But at least they "belonged" to the neighborhood. I can’t count the times I had someone say to me, "go home white boy" in my own neighborhood. Unfortunately, it didnt stop at verbal threats.

Being physically attacked by racists and having another racist try to stab me because of my skin color is bad enough, but to have an arrogant and privileged Liberal tell me that I don’t know what it is like to be a victim of racism is going too far.

Anonymous said...

Its' the same the world over freedomnow. My older brother and I were the only gringos in our neighborhood in the "California Norte" section of Caracas, Venezuela ('66-70) growing up. Fortunately, we attended a private "multi-national" school and so weren't forced to fight every day. Used to love the Carnival season there though... water balloon fights. Three gringos vs 30-40 Caraquenos... every balloon we threw wetted a "fresh" victim. LOL!

And jr. high/high school in San Jose, we were in the minority even back then in the 70's. It was about a 10-20-30-40 mix...we were the 30 w/ a "chicano" majority.

Liberals think whites "invented" racism and exclusion. They certainly love their "stereotypes".

We went up to Half Moon Bay once, not many people there, buuuut you had to walk down a cut through the old landfill! It didn't smell, but you sure didn't like grabbing the sides to pull yourself up the trail!
Ano Nuevo was probably one of our favorite spots, you slogged through 2 1/2 miles of tall sand dunes to get to the elephant seals, but the trip back had wild raspberries growing along the trail! Worth the trip. There was an island offshore with a lighthouse that had been abandoned to the harbor seals. There was also an old restored whaling station there. Lots of stuff to see. The drive up the coast was spectacular. Hiking up the Big Sur river was beautiful. I remember the first time we did that, our daughter was less than a year old so she rode in a backpack. Kicked Ben's ribs all the way up and back!
In Santa Cruz there was a Portugese bakery that made a sour dough with rosemary, green olives and whole cloves of garlic, made the best grilled cheese sandwiches!
Our landlords at the time were very conservative! She was chair of the local Republican party(half Indian and handicapped) her vice chair was a black woman. They had a debate at UCSC with the local dems, the 2 dems were white males in suits, so when the Republicans show up the dean asked if they were the democrats reps. They said no, we're the Reps. those are the dems. The dean nearly fainted!

Latinos are huge bigots. My family was racist against everyone except for Puerto Ricans. Luckily, they seem to have dropped the racism thing in the last 20 years.

As a kid I hated white people and I would have given you a hard time. I have since learned what racism is like and I wouldnt wish it on anyone.

Regardless, Latinos are wonderful people just like everyone else because we are all human. In our multicultural society race is becoming less important. I identify my race as hispanic, but I prefer to think of myself as an American.

Anonymous said...

We're all bigots and racists, freedomnow. There are just too many ways to slice "us" and "them". To think that it's unique to one "group" or "another", be it race or nationality, is simply ludicrous. I've had Latinos give me a hard time, even fought them on the street, yet I can also say, some of my best friends at that same time were also Latinos.... and later, Phillipinos... Chinese... Japanese... you name it. And in the end, you're right, it's important for us all to remember that we are ALL Americans.... and also ALL human. This "holding a grudge" or pretending to "blame" others for some historical wrong has got to end at some point. We all need a good stiff drink from the cup of forgetfullness. There will come a time when all this "war on terror" anti-Arab sentiment will also come to an end, too. But to point to it and start saying "Aha! I knew you Americans were racists, all along!" kinda "gotcha" argumentation is really stupid. Ecclesiastes... a time for everything, under heaven.

Freedomnow- A question? Was there a reason for the racism? and did living in the USA help your folks realize that Americans are Americans?

It was strictly a white t-shirt, jean, and cholo head-band kinda scene... with a parking lot full of low-riding Imapala's blasting "War" and "Carlos Santana"... not that we didn't have our own "dress code" complete with jacked-up Chevelle's blaring Led Zepplin.

Latinos have a lot of pride and there can even be friction between Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans, let alone other races. Intermarriage seems to have Americanized my family for the better.

Personally it was also shocking to visit Puerto Rico and be treated as a gringo. That really opened my eyes. One of the first things I remember is seeing graffiti saying, "Gringos Go Home". I wondered if that included me! To be fair I was treated well. Its just that there was always a tongue-in-cheek attitude because I was from the States.

FJ, to me Hispanic means any Latino and is as generic as the term White. Latino comes from Latin so what else is there? Mestizo? Indigneous?

Its just a label. Some people take their identity from a conformist-group perspective and take this way too seriously. I am an individual before even an American. I should be defined by who I am, not where I am or who I am related to. God damn sheep.
