The Vanishing Record Store

It seems there are less places to comb through the shelves of CDs, Books and DVDS. It is sad that my granddaughter will never know the fun of looking through bins for a gem. It is rare that I get down to the Princeton Record Exchange but it is well worth the trip.

I really miss these kinds of stores. A friend of mine used to run one. He did so for years! Now, of course, he's out of a job.

I remember all the wonderful times that I had during my teens and into adulthood --when I browsed through albums and, later CD's. Made some pretty good finds, too.

Was the iPod the main cause of the death of these of these stores?

I think the internet killed these stores. I miss the fun.

It's a real two edged sword.

I own a lot of films and the only way to build an international film library is through Amazon.
You simply aren't going to find a store with comprehensive inventory. Let alone out of print and non Region 1 titles.

I'm fortunate that independent book stores are still hanging on in various locations around Boston, both new and used. I do enjoy browsing books which is quite unlike looking for a DVD or CD.

Music has changed but a lot of people prefer to purchase by song rather than by full CD.

Duck,
The last of the independent book stores close to me went under several years ago. A great disappointment to many in this neighborhood. In fact, out here in the suburbs we have few of the chain bookstores remaining. Those of us who still buy hard copies of books are restricted to using Amazon if the chain stores don't carry what we want.

There are still some independent bookstores in D.C. and Baltimore. But the parking situation in those cities is impossible.

Go west -- toward the Shenandoah Valley, for example -- and there are independent book stores aplenty.

I just miss the fun of the independent book and record store.
Going there was an event in itself
with little discoveries and hidden gems
