Recent events have a letter from one of three inmates who escaped Alcatraz. I want to point out even if they were successful they didn't quite get everything. Had the Anglin Brothers stayed put they would have been reunited with their family. If they did have contact it was fleeting and sporadic. At least in prison the family could visit and been reunited some day.
Little is known about Frank Morris. He was not part of a large family and didn't have much to lose. For him to vanish into the shadows wasn't a big deal. The question still remains wouldn't it be easier to just serve the time and walk away free.
The odds of escape without recapture are very long. Unless you are never getting out it just isn't worth it
