Actually, I would like to see more countries ban international adoptions. There are two types of adoptions. For the most part there are the orphan adoptions. These cases are very regulated and are usually real orphans going to deserving families. The process is long and costly and should be so. For the most part these are real families and genuine adoptions. Countries should do a much better job of regulating this area. Children do not come with warranties or a fresh leather smell.
The other type of adoption is almost always done by relatives to skirt immigration law. This should be discouraged unless the family can establish some compelling reason. This reason should have nothing to do with country conditions with the rare exception of persecuted religious or ethnic minorities. The excuse that conditions in country x by itself is not sufficient explanation.

Beak, Russia is indeed right. This case boggles the mind, not to speak of the Russian children who didn't survive their experience of being adopted by an American "family" (whatever that may be nowadays).
I have commented on it here and here.
Thanks for bringing this up!
If the adoption process here weren't so ridiculous international adoption wouldn't be such a thing.
Of course, idiots like Angelina Jolie and Madonna have made it chic to pick up a impoverished foreign kid.
Really, the whole process should probably be dissected and reformed.

If Americans were not abusing adoption to violate immigration law
my views would be different. The fee for all adoptions should rise to ten thousand dollars. Adoption of relatives should be permitted only with medical testimony and proof that other relatives in country can not provide for the children.
We have neighbors who adopted a little Russian boy, who was abandoned by his mother. He is grown and doing quite well in life. Of course his parents were good, decent people.
Brooke is right about homegrown adoption being too difficult. My brother-in-law adopted two from the USA and the paperwork, waiting time and costs boggled my mind. But was wife couldn't have children so it was the only way for them to go. When I first suggested adoption to him years ago, he said "I'm not going to raise someone elses' mistakes." But he sings a very different tune now.
The whole process should be dissected and reformed, but the opportunity for orphans of any nationality to be acquired by a family and have a better life should not be completely aborted.
As for this nurse who packed off that little boy to Moscow by himself, she needs to do some jail time for child abandonment. Add an extra five years for just being stupid. She of all people should have been more compassionate and known what resources she had available for the situation.
No one has spoken of Foreigners taking American babies or kids to their own country, as in open adoption!
I know of one German couple that adopted a South American little girl and then a Native American Baby.
I see nothing wrong with adoption. People that can't have their own and love kids, especially for newborn babies. Why would anyone go thru all the paperwork and time if they couldn't or didn't really want to provide a better life for the child and the adoption process is open. Babies are so easy to love and get attached to, no matter the skin color.
My own Grandkids hues go from Pink/white, light brown, dusty brown, orange brown and dark brown. Then their skin color changes in the Summer time, how can a sane person be offended by the color of a skin, especially a child?
Of course complications can arise, but if done for all the right reasons, I support adoption.

Screw the Russians, if you want a kid, buy American.

Exactly! Even if the child is a flaming psychopath (he probably is) and even she has been lied to by the Russian officials (she most certainly has), the way she ended her commitment was beyond anything a decent person would consider.
