The goons of big labor have killed a piece of Americana. The last Twinkies and Wonderbread will be off store shelves soon. I can remember many good moments with a Drake cake nearby. On a lark I took two twinkies with me on the flight from LA. The legend of the cream being forced outside at higher altitudes was false.
Big labor backed Obama and his job killing healthcare debacle. The workers will join the ranks of Obama induced layoffs. The union was warned this would happen and pressed on with a strike.
Hopefully, some company will buy the Twinkie name and produce something similar.

I note that in the mainstream news there is much rejoicing that Twinkies are gone. Save the world from diabetes and obesity and all that. Pffffft.
What isn't getting mention: Beefsteak Rye bread is a Hostess product. That brand is low in carbs and calories -- and delicious. My favorite off-the-shelf brand, too. I prefer the seeded variety of rye bread.
And here's something else....I know a lot of autistic kids and even autistic adults who will eat no bread other than Wonder Bread white (with the crusts cut off, of course). Parents with autistic children have enough to worry about without having to find a new white bread brand for these picky kids, who simply cannot help themselves from having obsessions about food.
The thuggish unions killed Hostess. THAT is the unvarnished truth!
BTW, on several occasions, I used Twinkies to make a sort of strawberry shortcake. Just sayin'.
Next up?
Rationing something else by killing off the manufacturer?
For example, if Starbucks Coffee were to go under, much of America would revolt. Really. I myself don't much care for Starbucks Coffee. But I damned well had better get coffee, or I'm impossible to live with.
Hostess is owned by Ripplewood Holdings, a vulture capital firm, and two hedge funds, Silver Point Capital and Monarch Alternative Capital. As is typical for such parasites, they have loaded the company with debt and are slashing employment and benefits to maintain profits.
In order to accomplish that the vulture capitalists demanded (after previous union givebacks):
An immediate 8% wage reduction
The shift of at least 20% more health care costs onto its employees
Elimination of the employees’ W-1 (retiree medigap insurance)
Closure of additional plants (10-12), refusing to tell the union which plants are profitable, which plants will be closed, why, etc.
Elimination of the eight-hour work day.
Hostess unilaterally stopped paying its pension obligations in violation of federal labor law.
I wonder if you or any of the other pampered Federal layabouts, the east productive workers, would take that kind of treatment.
Fringe right Federal workers are so pampered and lazy they can't take a little time to get the story correct.
Duncy
So now thanks to Marxist Oaf union clowns they are all unemployed. Many of the bakers in the paper felt lied to by the union.
Note no communist ever created anything as wonderful as a Twinkie.
AOW
I see Beefsteak Rye getting picked up by another bakery. Wonderbread has been dying since the 80's. It was a memorabilia item
I hate commies as much as the next guy, but I still give them props for the AK-47 and Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey.
Wonder Bread gums up the works, but is a nice treat from time to time.
I'm glad to read that Beefsteak Rye will still be around.
Duck,
Medigap insurance costs about $38/month for the HMO variety. The PPO variety may be around $100/month -- easily affordable.
The shift of at least 20% more health care costs onto its employees
Hell, that's been going on all over the place for at least 5 years. ObamaCare was supposed to prevent a continuation of that shift; ObamaCare has not done so.
The shift away from company subsidies of retirement plans has long been disappearing bit by bit
You mentioned Fringe right Federal workers. That's funny! Most of the federal workers around here are clearly on the left side of the political spectrum.
